The charming town of Esztergom on the Danube Bend is the seat of the head of the Hungarian Catholic Church, the Archbishop of Esztergom. The castle was built in 972 AD where Saint Stephen, the first Hungarian king and founder of the Hungarian state was born. The landmark of the city is the Basilica, the largest church in the country with the largest single painted on canvas altarpiece in the world. The most valuable collection of Hungarian ecclesiastical treasures located here in the treasury of the Basilica. In the immediate vicinity of the Basilica the royal chapel decorated with frescoes and the rose window reminds the visitors of the former royal palace which was built in the Romanesque style.
