EXCURSION BY AN AIR-CONDICIONED CAR TO SZENTENDRE
Route-Nr. 0014/2011
Whole-day program
The narrow streets, the seven church towers, the colorful houses, narrow lanes, two dozen museums and not the least, the omnipresent Mediterranean atmosphere makes Szentendre the most visited place in the Danube Bend. Among the churches there are still four in possession of the orthodox Serbs who fled from the Turks at the time of the Turkish invasion in the Middle Ages. The icons, silverware and other treasures of the Serbian Orthodox Church's Museum complete the attractions of Serbian churches.
Hungary's largest folklore collection can be found in an open-air ethnographic museum, 3 km from the city center. After the final completion of the museum here can be seen 10 landscape units with a total of 340 buildings, the characteristics of Hungarian folk architecture are presented. The open-air exhibitions make it possible for the visitor to get authentic impressions of the atmosphere and scale of village life. Authenticity is achieved not only by furnished buildings arranged in settlement patterns but also by the outbuildings making up the farmyards (sties, stables, press houses, cellars, barns, apiaries, pigsties, maize-sheds, henhouses), workshops, mills, sacred buildings (churches, Calvaries, roadside crucifixes) and last but not least by those gardens, meadows, fields cultivated in a traditional way where vegetation is characteristic of the region. In vegetable gardens long forgotten but nowadays rediscovered plants are cultivated like Jerusalem artichoke; in the fields Bánkút wheat is grown; in our thickets blackthorn, thorn-bush and sumac blossoms; the plantation on the terraces of the Upland market town evokes Tokaj vineyards. The environs of the brook Sztaravoda constitute part of the Duna-Ipoly National Park so the original vegetation and wildlife of the museum deserves attention, too.
