The Danube Bend offers the most beautiful view in the Hungarian Danube section. The river bends to the south from here. The area has witnessed many important events in the Middle Ages. The charming town on the Danube Bend is the seat of the head of the Hungarian Catholic Church, the Archbishop of Esztergom. In 972 AD the castle of Esztergom was built where the first Hungarian king and founder of the country Stephean Ithe first, was born. The landmark of the city is the Basilica, the largest church in the country with the world's largest altarpiece painted on a single canvas.
